Malé to Maafushi

Quick answer

  • Maafushi, in Kaafu Atoll, is the Maldives' best-known guesthouse island, reachable by public ferry or speedboat.
  • The public ferry takes about 90 minutes and costs a small amount in rufiyaa; it does not run every day.
  • Shared speedboats take roughly 45 minutes to an hour and cost much more, but run more often.
  • Check the current timetable on RTL, or ask your guesthouse to book your speedboat.

Maafushi, in South Malé Atoll (Kaafu Atoll), is the island that started the Maldives' guesthouse boom. It has dozens of guesthouses and small hotels, a designated beach for tourists, and easy access to snorkelling, sandbanks and resort day trips, all at a fraction of resort prices. It is also one of the easiest local islands to reach. This guide explains your options for getting there from Malé or the airport, what to expect from each, and how to plan your arrival.

Your two main options

  • Public ferry: very cheap, slower, and runs only on certain days and times.
  • Shared speedboat: faster and more frequent, from the airport or Malé, at a higher price.

A third option, a private speedboat charter, gives complete flexibility for groups or late arrivals, at a much higher cost.

The public ferry

Journey time and cost

The public ferry from Malé to Maafushi takes about 90 minutes. Fares are very low: travel guides have reported around MVR 22 (roughly USD 1.50) per person, though some sources quote slightly higher figures. Check the current fare on RTL.

Schedule

The ferry runs on a limited schedule and not every day. Several routes serve Maafushi, and published timetables have shown departures from Malé in the morning on some days and in the afternoon on others. Timetables reported by travel sites differ, and they change. Before you plan, check the current schedule on the RTL website or app, and confirm with your guesthouse.

Fridays

Most inter-island ferries, including those to Maafushi, do not run on Fridays, the weekly holiday. If you arrive or leave on a Friday, plan to use a speedboat.

Where it leaves from

The ferry leaves from one of Malé's ferry terminals. Guides disagree about which terminal currently serves Maafushi, as departure points have changed over time. Confirm the terminal with RTL or your guesthouse, and allow time to get there by taxi from wherever you are in Malé.

Coming from the airport

The public ferry to Maafushi leaves from Malé, not the airport. If you arrive by plane and want to take the ferry, first cross to Malé by the airport ferry, bus or taxi, then make your way to the correct terminal. Allow plenty of time between landing and the ferry departure, especially if you have checked luggage.

Shared speedboats

Journey time and cost

Scheduled shared speedboats take roughly 45 minutes to an hour, depending on sea conditions. Travel guides have reported fares of around USD 25 to 30 per person each way, but prices vary by operator and season, so confirm when you book.

Where they leave from

Many speedboat services operate from the airport jetty, directly opposite the arrivals hall, which makes them convenient on arrival day. Some also leave from Malé.

How to book

The easiest way is to ask your guesthouse. Most Maafushi guesthouses arrange speedboat transfers for their guests, can tell you the departure times that match your flight, and will have someone meet you on arrival. Book in advance, particularly in high season (roughly December to April), when boats fill up.

Private speedboat

If your flight lands late, after the last shared speedboat, or you are travelling in a group, a private speedboat can take you directly from the airport to Maafushi at any reasonable hour. It is far more expensive than shared options for one or two people, but splitting the cost between several travellers can make it reasonable. Your guesthouse can usually arrange one.

Planning your arrival

  • Match your flight to the boats. Before booking flights, check the last speedboat time and the ferry days.
  • Late arrival? Consider a night in Hulhumalé near the airport, then travel to Maafushi in the morning.
  • Tell your guesthouse your flight number so they can track delays.
  • Bring cash in rufiyaa and some US dollars for small expenses on arrival.

Planning your departure

Leave plenty of margin before your international flight. Speedboats can be cancelled or delayed in rough weather, and ferries don't run every day. Many travellers take a speedboat back on departure day, or return to Hulhumalé the day before an early flight.

Arriving on Maafushi

Boats arrive at the island's harbour. Maafushi is small and walkable, and your guesthouse is likely to be within a few minutes' walk; many send someone to meet you. Remember that Maafushi is an inhabited island where local laws and customs apply:

  • Dress modestly away from the designated tourist beach: cover shoulders and knees.
  • Swimwear is for the designated "bikini beach" only.
  • No alcohol on the island. Excursions to nearby resorts or licensed boats are where visitors can drink.
  • Green tax is charged per person per night: USD 6 at guesthouses with 50 or fewer rooms on inhabited islands, and USD 12 at larger establishments.

Our guide to local laws and customs explains more.

Things to do once you're there

Guesthouses and local operators offer snorkelling trips, sandbank picnics, dolphin cruises, fishing trips, diving and resort day passes. Prices and quality vary, so compare a few operators, and check reviews and safety equipment before booking water activities.

Choosing a guesthouse on Maafushi

Maafushi has a wide range of places to stay, from simple rooms to small hotels with rooftop pools. When comparing them, check:

  • Distance to the tourist beach, if you plan to swim every day;
  • What's included: breakfast, transfers, taxes and excursion discounts;
  • The room count: guesthouses with 50 or fewer registered rooms charge the lower green tax rate;
  • Recent reviews for cleanliness, noise and how helpful the hosts are with boats and trips; and
  • Air conditioning and hot water, which most guesthouses have but are worth confirming.

Going on to other islands

Maafushi is a good base for exploring South Malé Atoll. Nearby islands such as Guraidhoo and Gulhi can be reached by ferry on the days services run, or by speedboat. If you plan to continue to another atoll, you may need to return to Malé first; check routes on RTL before booking your next guesthouse. Our guide to island hopping on a budget explains how to plan a route.

Seasickness and comfort

The channel between Malé and South Malé Atoll can be choppy, especially during the southwest monsoon. On a speedboat, sit towards the back where the ride is smoother, keep your eyes on the horizon, and take seasickness tablets in advance if you need them. On the slower ferry, sitting in the middle of the boat helps. Keep your passport and phone in a waterproof bag: spray is common.

Travelling with luggage

Speedboat crews load suitcases for you, but bags often sit at the back of the boat where spray reaches them. Use a hard case or a rain cover if you have electronics in checked luggage, and keep your passport, phone and cash in a small waterproof bag on your lap. On the public ferry, bags may be stacked with other passengers' luggage and cargo, so label them clearly.

Before you go: checklist

  1. Check RTL for ferry days and times, or book a speedboat through your guesthouse.
  2. Confirm the departure point (airport jetty or the correct Malé terminal).
  3. Check the weather forecast for the day.
  4. Pack modest clothing for the island and a waterproof bag for the boat.
  5. Leave a buffer before your return flight.
